Gerry Johansson (b. 1945, Swedish) Om jag hade fyra dromedarer is a study of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, photographed in 2008. The city, shaped by nomadic heritage, Soviet history, and rapid urban change, became the setting for a journey prompted by Chris Marker’s elusive connection to the place — the notion, repeated even by Marker himself, that he was born there, although Belleville in Paris has also been named as his birthplace.
Johansson’s photographs look at a city where different eras and ways of life exist side by side. In color, a rare departure within his practice, the images reveal the quiet contradictions of a city in transformation.
